Asian Elephant Foundation of Thailand

Elephants : love them, respect them, please help them

A growing human population has called for increasing economic and social development in Thailand, creating numerous environmental problems. With no ill intention, man has put the continued survival of wildlife underthreat. One of the animals which has been greatly effected by this threat is the elephant, not only the world's largest land mammal but one which has played a large part in man's history throughout Asia. A hundred years ago there were as many as 100,000 elephants in Thailand but a decline in population has taken place at a shocking rate, leaving only about 5,000 elephants whose futures are in doubt. Until now there has been no organisation devoted exclusively to helping elephants integrate into modern Thai life by promoting awareness and solicting assistance from people throughout the country. From its founding in 1990 to the present, the Asian Elephant Foundation of Thailand has been compiling data on elephants in order to give direction to solving problems by creation the following projects : registering elephants in general database and creation an adopt-an-elephant programme. Through this programme, the Asian Elephant Foundation co-ordinates the health care of 145 elephants. Despite such efforts, however, there are thousands more elephants who aren't receiving attention. Furthermore, the welfare from this fund only addresses the problems of health care. As for proper nutrition, accident prevention, employment (like humans, tame elephants need to be productively occupied for good mental health) and encroachment of habitat (in the case of wild elephants), such problems remain to be addressed. The Asian Elephant Foundation of Thailand, therefore, will be working on many projects to help integrate elephants into modern Thai life, fulfilling the directives of the organisation, whether it is through supporting an elephant shelter, an elephant employment agency, a division for capturing will elephants in mating season (when they can be dangerous), a division for mobile veterinarians or more. In addition there is the continued administration of the foundation which the workers and funds. Indeed, Thai elephants will not be out of danger until people recognise the need to help them co-exist with humans. Therefore the Asian Elephant Foundation of Thailand would like to invite everyone to contribute to this work before elephants become extinct in Thailand. Anyone can help whether it is by informing us about elephants in trouble or by boycotting trades which endanger elephants. Contributions may be made in the form of money, equipment of time. Project "Adopting an Animal"

This Project encourages people to adopt an animal from the foundation. There many animals requiring help consisting of basic necessity like medicine and food. This project not only gives a chance for the animal to survive but also very rewarding from the viewpoint of the foster parent when love, loyalty and friendship are being reciprocated from the dog.

Project: "One Baht a day to prolong lives of dogs and cats"

medical treatment of sick animals. The foundation, therefore, launched a project to raise the fund called “One Baht a day to prolong lives of dogs and cats” from the animal lovers in order to upgrade the living conditions of those animals.

Project: "Home for injured animals"

Each day, more and more animals come to the Home for Handicapped Animals Foundation. The animals have gone thru a traumatic, distraught and abused life. The Foundation is constantly shorthanded and is faced with funds shortage that is required to purchase basic items for the sick animals. The Foundation is in urgent need of the public 's donation to help make their lives less painful and sustain the livelihood of the sick animals.

Global Warming

Global Warming1. A recent study of ice-core samples in the Himalayas reveals the following facts:

(a.) the last decade was the warmest in 1000 years.

(b.) 2001 was the second warmest year on record.

(c.) nine of the ten warmest years have occurred since 1990.2. We are experiencing a warming trend known as global warming.

3. Global warming describes an increase over time of the average global temperature at the surface of the Earth, which has risen by 0.6 +- 0.2 C since the late 19th century.

4. If the warming trend continues, loves on Earth will be greatly affected.

Causes of Global Warming

1. Coal-burning power plants, vehicle exhausts, factory smokestacks, and other waste vents of the human environment contribute about 22 billion tons of carbon dioxide and other "
Greenhouse gases " into the earth's atmosphere each year.

2. Using motorised vehicles and machines and furnaces for heating and air condirioners for cooling comtribute to the rise in greenhouse gases being released.

3. Factories, power plants and oil refineries also increase the amount of greenhouse gases that are released.

4. Burning fossil fuels such as petroleum, gas and coal releases carbon dioxide.

5. The top five carbon dioxide producing countries are.

(a.) The United States

(b.) China

(c.) Russia

(d.) Japan

(e.) India6. Volcanic eruptions are another natural acticity that releases greenhouse gase.

7. The atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide has increased by 31% above pre-industrial levels since 1750.

8. this is similar to what happens in a greenhouse used to keep plants in warm temperature.

9. With out the natural greenhouse effect, temperatures on Earth would be too low to sustain life.
10.Too much carbon traps too much heat and therefore temperatures rise.
